With World Tattoo Day approaching (March 21), the livery of Air Tahiti Nui, one of the world’s most beautiful airlines, comes into the fore.
A longstanding element of Tahitian culture and the birthplace of tattoos, the word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word ‘tatau’, so it makes sense that the destination’s national carrier wears its own tattoos with pride.
Honouring the art, history, and culture of tattooing, Air Tahiti Nui’s unique livery showcases tattoos from French Polynesia, cementing its connection to the land it calls home, and its significant role in bringing Tahitian culture to people around the globe.
Launching in 2018, the airline’s livery incorporates markings derived from traditional Tahitian tattoos to the fuselage, telling a story of the airline and the culture it represents.
The tattoos include the manta ray, whale, albatross, Tiki eye, and fishhooks, each with their own symbolic meanings related to wisdom, protection, freedom, prosperity, and luck.
Surrounded by the tattoos is the Tiare flower, at home on the tail of each aircraft in Air Tahiti Nui’s fleet. Symbolising the warmth and hospitality of the Tahitian people, the flower is encircled by ripples on the water with flocks of birds that represent friendship and helping others.
The exterior of the Air Tahiti Nui manureva (birds of travel in Tahitian) is not the only aspect of the airline that reflects the beauty of Tahiti and the spirit of its 118 islands.
The colour palette of the cabin interiors is also inspired by the destination’s unique beauty, reflecting the intensity of the ocean and lagoons, the brightness of the destination, and the freshness of the lush vegetation.
All aircraft also feature innovative air purification and humidification systems, cabin pressurisation management, and lighting systems that help reduce fatigue upon arrival. In addition, Air Tahiti Nui aircraft engines are designed to be quieter to ensure a comfortable and truly relaxing journey.
