As overtourism and extreme weather prompt travellers to reconsider their destinations and travel habits, new trends are emerging that shape the way we explore.

The new year promises to unveil a more conscious and enriching travel experience, with companies offering unique opportunities that benefit travellers and the destinations themselves.

Brett Mitchell, ANZ Managing Director at Intrepid Travel, says, “2024 has been an insightful year for the travel industry, with shifts in how people approach travel.

“Travellers are increasingly drawn to sustainable, off-the-beaten-path experiences that foster deeper connections with nature and local communities.

“Overtourism awareness, sustainable and adventure tourism are also major trends, reflecting a broader awareness of tourism’s environmental and cultural impact and inspiring conscious choices.”

Here are Brett’s five key travel trends to expect in 2025.

TREND ONE: OFF THE BEATEN PATH

A growing number of travellers are seeking lesser-known destinations to escape the overcrowded, tourist-heavy locations that have dominated travel for years.

This trend is driven by a desire for more authentic, peaceful experiences where they can connect with local culture and nature.

This year, popular tourist spots like Venice and Barcelona faced protests from locals concerned about overtourism, which has led to overcrowding and environmental degradation.

In response, these destinations introduced tourist levies to manage the influx and fund improvements.

This shift towards quieter destinations is reflected in Intrepid Travel’s annual Not-Hot List, which highlights 10 underrated locations, such as the Anti-Atlas Mountains in Morocco and emerging destinations like Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan and Accra in Ghana, ready to welcome visitors in 2025.

TREND TWO: THE FEMALE FRONTIER

All-women group trips are booming. Women are boldly venturing into new territories on trips designed with them in mind and seeking to connect with like-minded individuals in local communities to empower positive change.

Regardless of their age, many women are looking for opportunities to step outside their comfort zones and create meaningful relationships with fellow travellers.

All-women trips offer the opportunity to engage with local communities and cultures on their own terms, as seen in the Saudi Arabia Women’s Expedition, which provides a unique chance to challenge stereotypes while immersing in cultural experiences.

TREND THREE: ADVENTURE TOURISM

The popularity of run clubs and group fitness is also influencing how people explore the world.

Intrepid Travel has reported a 70 percent growth in active tours (multi-active, walk & trek, cycling), catering to the increasing interest in active exploration – these trips offer physical challenges and opportunities to connect with local environments and cultures.

Travellers are clearly seeking adventure and active tourism experiences that engage them with nature while promoting personal well-being and health.

The added advantage of small group travel is that it offers social connection. Small group travel fosters friendships and creates a sense of community among those who share a passion for fitness and the outdoors.

TREND FOUR: TRAVELLING SOLO TOGETHER

People are increasingly turning to solo travel, seeking opportunities to explore the world on their own terms.

Zillennials, in particular, are discovering the joy of group travel as a way to transform their solo journeys into shared adventures, often turning fellow travellers into lifelong friends.

Data from Intrepid Travel reveals a 46 per cent growth in group travel, especially among younger millennials and older Gen Z.

As solo adventurers embrace this trend, they find that group trips fosters personal growth and offers enriching experiences that deepen their bonds with like-minded individuals.

This blend of community and individual exploration makes group travel an attractive option for those venturing out alone.

TREND FIVE: ENVIRONMENT-CONSCIOUS TRAVEL

We’re seeing more travellers seeking experiences aligning with their values, supporting initiatives that prioritise conservation and responsible practices, including companies that engage local communities.

More are embracing slow travel to foster deeper connections with destinations while supporting local economies.

Intrepid Travel’s rail trips have grown by 304 per cent in response to this trend. Instead of flying, travellers are opting to journey across countries by train, allowing them to experience destinations at a relaxed pace and connect meaningfully with local cultures.

Alongside rail tours, travel companies are prioritising sustainability to meet growing demand for responsible tourism – a trend set to shape the travel landscape over the next 12 months.

In 2025, travellers will adopt a more intentional approach to tourism. Trends like choosing lesser-known destinations, engaging in active adventures and prioritising connection over experiences will define the new frontier of travel.

As we look to the new year, the travel landscape is evolving to meet the desires and values of a new generation of travellers.

By embracing trends such as exploring off the beaten path, travelling during shoulder seasons and prioritising adventure and wellness, we can create a more sustainable and enriching future for travel.

With a focus on authenticity and responsibility, the journey ahead promises to be meaningful and transformative.
