Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines (SIA), today revealed the results of its latest Travelling Further for Less study in Australia, providing an insight into the aspirations and barriers faced by Australians when it comes to travelling. Conducted by YouGov, a global research agency, Scoot’s study found that while over three quarters of Australians (77%) are eager to travel more, the majority of respondents (81%) agreed that it has become less accessible due to the rising costs of travel.
Despite cost being a significant barrier, many remain determined to travel in 2025, with more Australians finding ways to make their money travel further by turning to low-cost carriers, adding a stopover-cation to the itinerary or travelling during off-peak periods.
Scoot’s study also shows a shift in how Australians are approaching travel. As domestic travel costs continue to soar1, nearly half of Australians (49%) are considering travelling out of the country as international travel has become a more affordable option. Additionally, the study showed how Australians are adapting their lifestyles to commit to their travel plans, with 40% of Australians cutting back on non-essential spending, 26% taking on additional work to supplement their income streams, and 25% postponing major purchases to prioritise travel.
How Australians plan to travel in 2025
According to the study, Australians are turning to low-cost carriers to make international travel more affordable, with 31% of Australians choosing to fly with low-cost carriers.
Australians are also becoming more strategic when it comes to booking international trips. Some of the most common tactics to make overseas travel more affordable included booking flights with stopovers (69%), making their reservations well in advance (55%), travelling in non-peak periods (46%), making the most of deals available by buying flights on sale (44%) and choosing to travel light with only carry-on baggage to cut costs (27%).
Just as how Australians stretch their money on flights, Scoot’s study showed that many Australians also make the most out of their travels once they arrive at their destinations. The most common strategies are eating at local eateries (49%), visiting free attractions (49%), staying at a cheaper accommodation (42%), and using public transport as much as possible (41%).
Top destinations and the rise of ‘stop-overcations’ in 2025
In 2025, Japan continues to be a top overseas destination for Australians, with almost half of the respondents naming it as their number one destination, closely followed by Singapore then Greece. Australians are also eager to travel to their usual favourites including South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
Scoot’s study also found a rise in ‘stop-overcations’, where travellers use a stop-over to explore a new city and visit multiple destinations on a single trip. Three quarters of Australians (75%) are considering a ‘stop-overcation’ to visit more destinations and regions on a single trip. Millennials are leading the way with this rising trend, as the majority (89%) are considering a ‘stop-overcation’ to get more out of their long-haul travel.
“At Scoot, we are committed to making international travel more accessible by offering Australians the opportunity to explore over 70 destinations in our network across Asia, Middle East and Europe, while ensuring good value air ticket prices” said Adam Kelly, General Manager (Australia), Scoot. “Our study shows that Australians are still eager to travel and we want to help our customers make their money travel as far as they do. Scoot’s customers travel through Singapore as part of their journey, and the ‘stop-overcation’ provides Australians the option to experience another city in one trip, making the most of their holiday in a cost-effective way.”
