Celebrating 94 years of operation this week, Launceston Airport is embarking on a multi-million-dollar transformation of its Departures Hall—the most significant terminal renovation in nearly two decades.
As part of this major redevelopment, the Departures Hall will be expanded to provide more leisure space for passengers, while three amenity blocks will undergo a full refurbishment. The project will also introduce modern traveller conveniences, including fast Wi-Fi, additional charging points, and increased seating to allow passengers to relax and enjoy the airport’s stunning views.
Three new hospitality venues will open later this year: Gatty’s Bar and Kitchen, named after Tasmanian aviation pioneer Harold Gatty; Kanamaluka Café, inspired by the Aboriginal name for the Tamar River; and Liv Eat, a beloved Tasmanian brand. Additionally, the Launceston Store will be expanded, with all new outlets designed to reflect Tasmania’s striking landscapes and waterways while showcasing the region’s finest food and wine.
Launceston Airport CEO Shane O’Hare said the redevelopment would create a Departures Hall experience that captures the spirit of the region.
“For 94 years, Launceston Airport has been the gateway to Tasmania’s tourism. As we look ahead, it’s important to honour our rich history while shaping an exciting future,” he said.
“This is the largest renovation of our terminal in almost 20 years, marking a new era for Launceston Airport. The design integrates modern infrastructure with a distinct Tasmanian identity, following on from our $14 million Check-in Hall and security screening project. Next year, our focus will shift to the Arrivals Hall.”
Renowned Tasmanian architects Cumulus have worked closely with the airport to ensure the redevelopment embodies the region’s natural beauty.
“Every aspect of the transformation—from the names of our venues to the materials and colours used—has been carefully chosen to celebrate Tasmania’s heritage. Once completed, this will be a truly world-class departures experience. We appreciate passengers’ patience as we undertake this exciting work.”
SSP Regional Managing Director Dominic Cain expressed pride in partnering with Launceston Airport to introduce the new hospitality offerings.
“At SSP, our goal is to enhance the passenger experience by providing exceptional food and beverage options that showcase local flavours and producers. Gatty’s Bar and Kitchen, Kanamaluka Café, and Liv Eat will give every traveller a true taste of Tasmania before they depart.”
Cain emphasised the shared vision between SSP and Launceston Airport to create a welcoming, memorable, and distinctly Tasmanian airport experience.
“An airport is more than just a transit hub—it’s the beginning of a journey. By working closely with local suppliers, we are crafting an airport dining experience that is authentic and unforgettable.”
SSP remains committed to delivering high-quality, destination-led dining experiences across Australian airports, ensuring travellers enjoy world-class hospitality that reflects the unique culture and flavours of each region.
