Emergency services rushed to Melbourne Airport on Monday evening following an incident involving a SriLankan Airlines Airbus A330.

SriLankan Flight 605 declared an emergency shortly after taking off from Melbourne International Airport at 6.32pm local time.

According to transmissions heard on LiveATC.net, crews reported smoke in the cockpit. 

Transmission of the emergency squawk code of 7700 meant the flight became the most tracked in the world, with nearly 10,000 people tracking the flight on FlightRadar24.com.

The flight landed back in Melbourne at 7.27pm local time.

A spokesperson for Melbourne Airport told TravelTalk the flight landed safely and was taxiing to an airport bay.

SriLankan Flight 605 was heading for Columbo in Sri Lanka.

Fire Rescue Victoria referred all questions to Air Services Australia.
