The William Inglis Hotel MGallery hosted its annual Pink October charity event in support of the McGrath Foundation, with Michelle Payne OAM, the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup as the star guest.

Payne’s victory in 2015 remains one of the most iconic moments in Australian sport, symbolising resilience, courage, and the breaking of barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. With two-time Olympic medallist Sarah Ryan as emcee, and Debbie Kepitis, co-owner of the legendary Winx, one of the greatest racehorses in Australian history, the event was set in the stables where the Inglis yearling sales take place, and where Debbie paid a record $10 for Winx’s first filly.

“I am honoured to be here to help raise funds for such an important cause,” Michelle said, before sharing her life story as the youngest of ten children in a horse racing family. Excerpts from the film of her life, Ride Like a Girl, were shown, alongside footage of her winning the ‘race that stops the nation’.

“We could not think of a more fitting ambassador for our Pink October lunch than Michelle Payne, who captured the hearts of Australia when she won the Melbourne Cup and who continues to inspire women and girls to believe they can do anything they set their hearts to,” said William Inglis Hotel MGallery GM, Belinda Thomson.

The hotel has placed stickers with QR codes in rooms and public areas to help women understand how to conduct a thorough self-examination and will continue to raise money for The McGrath Foundation throughout October.

The William Inglis Hotel MGallery blends luxury with rich equestrian heritage.
