Opposition leader Peter Dutton has taken a swipe at Canberra as a destination during an interview on the Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show on Kiis FM.

Dutton was on air to talk about the benefits of his new nuclear energy policy, but the conversation turned to the use of drugs such as cocaine towards the end of the chat.

The politician was asked by Sandilands why Canberra appeared to have a more liberal attitude towards drugs than in other parts of Australia.

Dutton said Canberra had “legalised everything.”

“Why have you politicians legalised all that fun stuff only for Canberra and the rest of us we get locked up overnight? Will this become Australia wide? Will we be able to get to a Chemist Warehouse and get a couple of baggies?” Sandilands asked.

“Have you ever been to Canberra? Dutton said before being interrupted.

“I understand, you gotta be munted!” Sandilands said.

“I get it, I get it,” said Jackie O.

Dutton laughed.

Earlier in the conversation, Dutton joked that during the cost of living crisis people may have to cut back on the cocaine consumption

“I reckon people are gonna start tightening their belts and if you can’t afford to pay the bills maybe you can cut back on coke consumption at the same time,” he said.

“But if that’s a choice you’re making, it’s a bad choice for anyone to choose illicit substances. That’s the important message,” Dutton said.
