Travelex has launched its first store in Hobart as traveller demand for both travel cash and pre-paid cards continues to surge.
Located in the Eastlands Shopping Centre, Tasmania’s largest shopping centre in the suburb of Rosny Park, the kiosk will offer customers access to both 50 currencies in cash and Travelex’s pre-paid Travel Money Card.
The Hobart location is the foreign exchange company’s second store in Tasmania, having operated in Launceston for more than 20 years, and it’s 93rd in Australia overall.
This year Travelex has already opened 18 new stores and kiosks across the country, including prime locations in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.
“We’re so excited to be establishing a store in Tasmania’s flagship retail destination,” said Darren Brown, Managing Director ANZ, Travelex.
Research from Travelex has shown that Australian travellers are equally split when transacting with cash (52%) and card (48%) abroad.
Those customers who purchase their travel money (whether cash or card) pre-trip are much more satisfied than those who buy cash at the airport, withdraw cash at their destination, or use a credit card abroad.
“We know that the happiest traveller is one who has both the flexibility of cash and card, and the opportunity to acquire their travel money in advance of their trip,” added Mr Brown.
“Our Hobart store has been designed to offer just this service, offering Tasmanians even more convenient access to travel money than ever before.”
According to the Australia Bureau of Statistics, the number of Australians travelling overseas on short trips reached pre-pandemic levels in January this year and has risen by 32% in the 2023-2024 period compared with the previous year.
