Prior to the launch of the Great Southern, a ‘Summer Ghan’ was trialled, but due to the challenges and weather events that come with the Northern Territory’s wet season, this was not viable.
Consequently, a new rail journey was crafted to explore the East Coast, utilising Ghan carriages that would otherwise remain idle from December to February.
