Indonesia AirAsia will return to Darwin in 2025, further opening up the Northern Territory to Asia and the rest of the world.
The CLP Government has welcomed news that Indonesia AirAsia will return to the Territory with the resumption of Darwin-Bali services.
Indonesia AirAsia will resume flights from Darwin to Bali, operating three-weekly direct flights from 22 March. Jetstar Australia also operate on this route.
This new route will deliver over 1,000 visitor seats weekly through Darwin International Airport and Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, providing a boost to tourism and the economy.
Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, Robyn Cahill, said it was a huge win for Territorians.
“We are delighted that Indonesia AirAsia will return to Darwin in 2025 with a direct service between Darwin and Denpasar,” said Ms Cahill.
“The AirAsia Group is a globally respected aviation company so resuming flights to Darwin will give confidence to business and leisure visitors looking to travel to the Territory.
“The re-establishment by our government of a dedicated portfolio of Asian Relations is a clear demonstration of the importance of our northern neighbours to growing the Territory’s economy.
“This new service will serve to support access between the Territory and our northern neighbours facilitating mutually beneficial trade, investment, study and skilled migration; as well as leisure visitation.
“The NT Government, in partnership with NT Airports, has regular conversations with prospective airlines to ensure we can grow aviation access for the benefit of all Territorians.
“We will continue to work with industry to secure more aviation services and ensure we have more flights coming into the Territory.”
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Marie Clare Boothby, said the new route would improve access, consumer choice, airfare competition and liveability.
“This is great news for the Territory’s tourism industry; we welcome Indonesia AirAsia back to the Territory,” she said.
“As we rebuild the Territory economy and restore our great lifestyle, we will continue to work with industry to develop new products and promote our fantastic tourism experiences.”
Indonesia AirAsia’s investment in Darwin reinforces the Territory’s strong and growing travel demand, creating business opportunities for airline partners.
Indonesia AirAsia CEO Veranita Yosephine said the airline was thrilled to return to the Territory bringing more value and choice for consumers in the Top End of Australia.
“Bali is now our largest hub in terms of flight capacity, driven by strong demand. These direct flights will cater to the enduring popularity of Bali as a destination for Australians and offer great low fare connections to over 130 destinations across the AirAsia Group network,” said Veranita.
“Passengers from Darwin can enjoy seamless connections via Bali to destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Hong Kong and Komodo Island starting from as low as under A$300.
“At the same time, millions of guests from across Asia will be welcomed to the Northern Territory. They will discover the extraordinary culture, wildlife and natural beauty of Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Land and other iconic locations where the tropics meet the outback.
“We thank Airport Development Group and the Northern Territory Government for their support in making these services a reality.”
Sandra De Kock, Executive General Manager at Airport Development Group, welcomed AirAsia back to Darwin, highlighting the strong local demand for travel to Bali.
“Territorians have been calling for more options to fly to Bali, and we’re excited to deliver with the return of AirAsia,” he said.
“Bali has long been the number one holiday destination for Darwin residents, and these flights will undoubtedly see a surge of travellers embarking on their Indonesian adventures.
“This partnership goes beyond just flights; it strengthens our connection to Asia, fostering cultural exchanges and bolstering business ties between the Northern Territory and our northern neighbours.
“We’re proud to work with AirAsia to make these services a success and support the growth of tourism and our local economy.
“We look forward to working closely with AirAsia to ensure the success of these services.”
While the route provides non-stop connectivity between Darwin and Bali, it will also serve as an international hub to onward destinations across the AirAsia Group’s route network.
This new route will strengthen the Northern Territory’s two-way connection with Asia enabling Territorians to holiday, do business and spend time with family.
It will also enable the Northern Territory to connect with over 4 billion people in the region who may want to visit, study, do business, or live and work here.
