American Express has launched its 2025 Global Travel Trends Report, revealing that 78% of Australians plan to take up to three holidays this year, reflecting a strong appetite for both domestic and international travel.
The report highlights key insights into the evolving priorities of Australian travellers. The top consideration for holiday-goers is destinations that fit within their budget (68%), followed by locations that align with their interests, such as food, sport, and fashion (42%). Additionally, 42% of travellers are prioritising destinations that offer authentic local experiences.
One of the most intriguing trends uncovered is the increasing influence of children in travel decision-making. According to the report, 59% of Australian parents say their children play a role in informing travel plans, shaping family trips in new and exciting ways.
Travel hacking is also gaining traction, with 44% of Australians planning to use reward points for their travel in 2025. Meanwhile, nearly half (46%) of Australians intend to book a trip specifically to attend an entertainment event, underscoring the importance of creating lasting memories through travel.
Technology is playing a greater role in travel planning, with 70% of Australians finding Generative AI useful for booking trips. Notably, 34% use AI specifically for activity recommendations, demonstrating a shift towards digital tools enhancing personalised travel experiences.
Commenting on the findings, Corinne Ng, American Express Vice President & General Manager of Travel & Lifestyle Services, said: “It’s clear that Aussies are redefining travel by prioritising meaningful experiences, maximising reward points, and blending technology with personal insights. From kids influencing family trips to booking holidays around live events, travel is more intentional than ever.”
As 2025 unfolds, these insights indicate that Australians are not only eager to travel but are also more strategic and experience-driven in their approach to holiday planning.
