A Fiji Airways Boeing 737 flying from Adelaide to Nadi has landed in Noumea following an emergency onboard.

The flight was travelling as normal at 5.47pm Sydney time at around 37,000 feet.

It then descended to around 5,000 feet and began to circle off the coast of New Caledonia, near Noumea.

Fiji Airways has confirmed the incident and provided the following statement.

We wish to inform our passengers and the public that Fiji Airways Flight FJ960 from Adelaide to Nadi was diverted to Noumea due to a medical emergency on board. It is with great sadness that we confirm the passenger involved has passed away.

The aircraft will refuel in Noumea before continuing its journey to Nadi.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and extend our deepest condolences to the passenger’s family. Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities to support those involved.

We thank our passengers for their understanding and patience during this difficult situation.
