Several airlines have suspended flights into Haiti after a plane was raked by gunfire as it prepared to land.

No passengers were hurt but a flight attendant suffered minor injuries as the Spirit Airlines flight came in to land in Port-au-Prince.

According to www.bbc.com/news, Spirit Airlines Flight 951 from Fort Lauderdale in Florida was diverted to the neighbouring Dominican Republic where it landed safely at Santiago Airport.

It is the second time in three weeks that a plane has been shot at over the Haitian capital.

Video of the incident shared on social media claimed to show bullet holes in the plane’s fuselage.

A spokesperson for Spirit Airlines said the plane had been taken out of commission and that the damage was “consistent with gunfire”.

American Airlines and JetBlue have joined Spirit in suspending flights to the country which is currently in the grip of a political crisis with armed gangs controlling several regions of the poverty-stricken nation.
