My recent trip to Morocco was one of the most unforgettable travel experiences I’ve had.
I was travelling with two of my oldest friends and another couple in two cars on a three-week adventure around Morocco, a place I knew hardly anything about.
There is so much to see, touch and do. Jewellery, homewares, artwork, shoes, rugs, pottery, cats, coffee, people, donkeys, cafes, food stalls, antiques, museums, palaces, deserts…
Over three days and nights in Marrakech we explored the city. We hired a guide for a walking tour of gardens, palaces and some local life (recommended), visited Marjorelle Garden, (go early to avoid crowds), visited the beautiful Bacha Coffee house and shopped (and got lost!) in the market.
Even after my 30-hour journey to get there from Australia, I wasn’t tired. I loved taking it all in. We dined at restaurants for lunches and dinners and saw incredible sunsets, occasional belly dancers and thoroughly enjoyed the Marrakech vibe. The food and service we had was great and the people were friendly.
Here are five things you have to do on your next trip to Morocco.
1 Explore the Medina in Marrakech
Marrakech’s old city, or Medina, is a wonderful maze of narrow streets packed with souks selling beautiful homewares, jewellery, food stalls, rugs, artwork and so much more.
Don’t miss Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square that comes alive at night with musicians, snake charmers and street food. The Majorelle Garden and Koutoubia Mosque are must-sees too, for a little calm amid the bustle.
2 Road trip through the Atlas Mountains
There’s no better way to experience Morocco’s natural beauty than on a road trip through the Atlas Mountains. Starting from Marrakech, drive through winding mountain passes offering plenty of chances to stop in Berber villages and try local foods.
The scenery is diverse; one moment, you’re surrounded by towering peaks, the next you’re in lush valleys or alongside the edge of dramatic cliffs.
Make sure to stop at the Dades Gorge and Todra Gorge for some of the most memorable views.
3 Stay overnight in the Sahara Desert
Spend a night in the Sahara Desert under a blanket of stars – it’s unforgettable. You can start in Merzouga, where you’ll ride camels through the dunes to a glamping-style desert camp.
Sunsets and sunrises in the dunes are surreal and you’ll enjoy traditional Moroccan music and cuisine around a campfire.
4 Thrilling 4×4 ride through the Sahara dunes
Experience a heart-pumping 4×4 ride through the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. This off-road trip is so much fun!
The high dunes and big drops offer some adrenaline-packed moments as the experienced drivers take you up and down the sandy hills, giving you a wild ride you won’t forget.
5 Stay in a traditional kasbah near Zagora
Experience a stay at a traditional kasbah: a fortified home with thick, adobe walls and a unique desert ambiance. Situated near Zagora, Kasbah Hnini is a prime example.
This beautifully restored kasbah offers a mix of traditional architecture and modern comfort, with spacious courtyards, cozy rooms, great infinity pool and beautiful mountain and desert views.
Enjoy the authentic experience of rural Moroccan life with a peaceful stay at this secluded desert retreat.
WHERE TO STAY
(Traveltalk recently featured a story on Aussie Angela Mellak, who opened boutique luxury property Riad Botanica in Marrakesh in 2023 to critical acclaim.
“My aim was to create a tranquil space for those who wish to slow down, look within, reconnect to themselves (and others) and reinvigorate their spirit,” Angela told us. Larissa was invited to spend a night there on her recent trip.)
I had the pleasure of staying at Riad Botanica on my last night in Morocco and it was a lovely experience from start to finish.
The Riad is within the Medina, just a short walk from the market centre. My luggage and I were met by Mohammed, the owner, and accompanied to the Riad.
Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed with traditional mint tea and fresh dates and nuts by the beautiful pool under the orange tree. While I was sipping my tea, I overheard Mohammed sharing his wealth of local knowledge and tips with another new arrival.
He gave highlights of the area, restaurant tips, how to deal with taxis and tips on bartering when shopping. He shared a local map and gave the guests a great view of what to expect (and look out for) during their stay in Marrakech…something I would have loved at the beginning of my trip to Morocco.
His passion for Marrakech was evident and it made the experience feel even more personal. He also helped me arrange transport to the airport for my early morning flight, making the entire process seamless and stress-free.
The Riad is beautifully decorated, blending authentic Moroccan design with a modern touch. The attention to detail in every corner is impressive, creating an atmosphere that felt both luxurious and connected to local culture.
My room was beautifully appointed and the bed was so comfortable! I had the best night’s sleep.
The Riad’s pool area is another standout, offering a serene and beautiful space to relax. The gentle chirping of a budgerigar in the corner under an orange tree added a charming touch to the tranquil setting.
Plus, the location is fantastic – just a short five-minute walk from the bustling main market in the Medina, making it easy to explore the heart of Marrakech.
I would highly recommend Riad Botanica to anyone looking for a magical stay in Marrakech.”
