The full 94 kilometre Wangetti Trail in the rainforest of Tropical North Queensland is scheduled to be completed in 2026. It has been co-designed with Traditional Owners, following extensive consultation and collaboration.
Once completed, the trail will span a World Heritage area, three national parks, two local government areas and three separate registered native title claims.
The first 7.8km Grade 3 stage has opened to hikers and mountain bikers with the two-way, shared track taking about 90 minutes to hike and 45 minutes to ride one way from the Palm Cove Jetty to Ellis Beach.
The $47million trail will be Queensland’s first purpose-built dual use walking and mountain biking track in a national park and one of Australia’s leading adventure-based ecotourism experiences, attracting visitors on an international scale and injecting up to $388million into the local economy.
The Trail will be delivered in three sections:
- Wangetti South: 33km walking and mountain biking trail from Palm Cove to Wangetti
- Wangetti North: 54km walking and mountain biking trail from Wangetti to Mowbray River
- Mowbray North: 7km walking and mountain biking trail from Mowbray River to Port Douglas
Once fully operational, the trail will include a choice of public camping facilities and high-end eco-accommodation offerings.
It will deliver more than 150 local jobs during construction and operation, along with sustainable and long-term business opportunities for locals, the Traditional Owners and their future generations.
