The Shizuoka Prefecture, located just an hour from Tokyo via bullet train, has witnessed a surge in popularity among Australian travellers this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

New data released by the Japan Tourism Agency has revealed that the number of overnight stays in February 2024 increased by 347.1% compared to the same period in 2019. The remarkable results highlight a resurgence in tourism activity in the region and follow a successful year in 2023, in which Shizuoka welcomed 26,760 overnight guests from Australia.

Shizuoka continues to outperform other Prefectures in Japan’s post-pandemic recovery, with the destination’s 2023 growth rates 64.4% above the national average for Australian travellers. These results come as other areas of Japan become increasingly popular with tourists, prompting Australian travellers to seek out lesser-known destinations such as Shizuoka.

Director of Tourism Shizuoka Japan, Tomoko Koyama, is delighted by the increased interest from Australians in the destination. “The surge in Australian visitors is a testament to Shizuoka’s diverse attractions, including our breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji, diverse landscape, and rich culture. We are thrilled to see such a positive response from Australian travellers and are committed to providing them with unforgettable and authentic experiences during their stay.”

This growth proceeds a phenomenal period of development for the Prefecture’s tourism industry, with the new Atami Izusan KARAKU hotel opening in December, 2023 and the launch of Japan’s first helicopter tour to the Southern Alps in January. These new attractions further enhance Shizuoka’s appeal, offering visitors unique and luxurious experiences.

While in Shizuoka, Australian travellers can expect to relax in the soothing hot springs, explore lush tea plantations and sample unique seafood delights. Adventure seekers can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and water sports, while those interested in history and culture can visit temples, historic sites, and vibrant festivals.
